Muscle Terminology
Prime mover- muscle whose contraction is the main source of a movement
Antagonist- Muscle that opposes the action of a prime mover or initiates opposite movement
Synergist- Muscle that assist the action of a prime mover
Tendon- attatches muscle to bone
Orgin-Typically a muscles proximal attatchment and most stationary point
Insertion- Typically a muscles distal attatchment that moves with the bone during contraction
Action- What is being moved and at which joint it is being moved at
Fascia- Dense connective tissue that holds muscle in position and seperates them from adjacent muscles
Aponeuroses- Thick fiberous sheets that can connect muscle to periosteum of a bone, or other tendons
Vastus- Huge
Maximus- Large
Minimus- Small
Longus- Long
Brevis- Short
Deltoid- Triangle
Latissimus- Wide
Teres- Round
Trapezius- trapezoid
Rhombus- rhomboid
Pectoralis- Chest
Gluteus- buttocks
Bracii- arm
Supra- Above
Infra- Below
Sub- under, beneath, (deeper)
Lateralis- More Lateral
Medialis- More medial
Intermedialis- in between medail and lateral
Rectus- straight
Oblique- angled
Adductor- toward midline
Abductor- away from midline
Flexor- makes angle smaller
Extensor- makes angle larger
Levator- raises, elevates
Depressor- Lowers
Triceps- 3 attatchments
Biceps- 2 attatchments
Quadriceps- A group of four muscles that work together
