Oral cavity- Mastication (mechanically breaks up food and mixes with saliva.
Tongue- Covered in papillae (used to taste)
Salivary glands- Secretes saliva to help moisten food, bind food particles, and begins digestion of carbs. produces serous and mucous.
Pharynx- Connects nasal and oral cavities.
Stage 1- Food chewed and mixed with saliva and bolus is rolled into pharynx.
Stage 2-swallowing reflex is initiated by receptors in the pharyngeal opening while epiglottis closes off trachea.
Stage 3- Peristalsis transports.
Esophagus- Brings food from pharynx to stomach by using peristalsis.
Stomach-Receives food from esophagus and mixes with gastric juices.
Pancreas- Creates pancreatic juices and enzymes which digest carbs, fats, and proteins.
Liver- Destroys bacteria, and creates bile.
Gallbladder- Stores bile.
Small intestine- completes digestion of nutrients in chime, and absorbs the products of digestion.
Large intestine- Absorbs water and compact feces.
